Okay, time to blow your mind a little. It won’t hurt, I promise, although it may make you a little less certain of the phrase "I’ll believe it when I see it."
Scroll down just enough to see the checkerboard I’ve posted below. Notice how I’ve put a dark square in the upper left, messing up the nice checkerboardy pattern. Pretty mind blowing, eh?
All right, all right. I know it isn’t. But maybe what’s coming next will be. Below the checkerboard I’ve placed ANOTHER checkerboard and this one is animated. What happens is the dark square on the upper left will hang around there for 2 seconds and then take off on a journey diagonally down, moving a total of 2 diagonal squares. Then it rests for 2 seconds and restarts. Watch the square as it goes and think about what’s happening to its color as it travels. Go ahead and scroll down now and watch for a while.

So what did you notice? I’ll bet you saw that what I did as I moved the square was I progressively lightened it so that when it got to the final position it was as light as the square that was originally there. Am I right?
And that would be thoroughly boring (the opposite of mind-blowing) if that were what I actually did. So let me now tell you what I REALLY did. I moved the original square and did NOTHING to the color. All I did was move it.
WHAT?! But, but … how is that possible? It starts off dark gray and ends up light gray, right ….?
Nope. It starts out as medium gray and ends up as medium gray.
Weird enough for you? If you want to hear a little more about this, leave a comment. Enough comments and I’ll post some fascinating followup material on Tuesday. But I don’t want to bore my readers so no comments will tell me you don’t have any interest (which is fine) and I’ll just move on to some other topic. It’s up to you to decide …
- And that’s today’s word from the bird

COM MENT COM MENT COM MENT about the moving square, plz.
Explain the moving square please!
Tell us about the square!
Optical illusions are fascinating!
Nice take on a classical optical illusion! Shows how easy the brain is to fool, a little shadowing and the brain is sure that the coulors are different
i would respond, but my mind is blown
Tell, tell, tell!!!
I'm starting to get motivated….
My mind is not blown.
I demand you continue until it has been. However: what ever happend to that "from the sketchpad" thing or whatever?
