I thought Atlas carried the sky on his shoulders? And to hercules defense Atlas was a titan, and Hercules "only" a demigod
Matyas is right, Atlas carried the sky on his shoulders. I don't know why the statues depict him as carrying the whole Earth…
nope the truth is he got punnished by carrying the weath of the world so its the hole world on his shoulder. im expert in mythology
your knowledge of greek is flawed then because i remember atlases punishment specifically stating that he had to hold the heavens on his shoulder NOT the earths weight, essentially atlas was the explanation greeks used for why the sky is above us
But he's GOT the sky on his shoulders. Don't you see it – encircling the globe …
Did some cheking up after posting
actually he don't carry the earth on his shoulders in the statue, he carrys the skyglobe, and if you were to see it IRL you would be abel to see some of the constelations on the globe. And Hercules did actually carry the sky for some time, but managed to trick Atlas into taking it back on his shoulders
so maybe not weaker but definitivly meaner
But Atlas tricked him first!
It depends on the translation. From what I can tell Atlas is said to hold up the entire world like in the picture, but there are other sources that says he holds up the sky. I guess the poor guy holds up both?
i think the literal translation is he(atlas) holds up the heavens(might mean he holds both sky and earth though can’t recall but i think the greek version of heavens is different) but it was changed to make sense to the readers or mistranslated between versions
I'm glad I didn't have Atlas' guidance councilor in high school.
"I've got a great job for you, Atlas. No commuting and lots of fresh air and exercise. You don't mind some heavy lifting do you?"
In Hercule's myth, Atlas carried the sky. And so did Hercule :
The eleventh Labor of Hercules was to steal the golden apples from the Garden of the Hesperides, Atlas' daughters.
Hercules replaced Atlas at carrying the sky by the time he went to his daughter's garden to pick the apples.
So technically, Atlas neither "stayed top dog forever"
One kick in the balls and that would be the end of it. If Herc really want to keep him down, he'd borrow my mate's goth boots; proper, thick-arse soles and studs on the sides. And if that's not enough a steel plate with an intricate design on the outside of the shoe covering the toes will be. Atlas will go down.
supposedly Atlas has to hold up the sky so that it never touches the Earth thus the two primordial forces which are Gaea(the Earth) and Uranus(the Sky) would never meet again and no more Gods/Titans/Giants/other mythological creatures could be created out of their union
nice comic, but… why are there two of them?
Because I did a complete site overhaul yesterday and accidentally doubled them. Thanks for noticing – it’s fixed now.
Doesn’t matter if Atlas was stronger his job really cuts into his dating time.
